Resources and answers to help you make better decisions
FAQs
We've spent years helping businesses and families navigate complicated tax and financial decisions.
Here are answers to some of the things new clients ask us most often.
-
We work with growing or mature businesses, individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and anyone needing financial expertise that wants more than just year-end tax preparation.
Many of our clients are business owners balancing growth, operations, and long-term financial planning while looking for a trusted advisor who can help simplify complex decisions.
-
While we work closely with many business owners and entrepreneurs, we also provide tax planning and accounting services for individuals and families. In many cases, the business and personal financial picture are closely connected, and we help clients navigate both together.
-
Just like with many other questions we receive, it depends on several factors. For many small businesses, starting as a sole proprietor or LLC provides simplicity and flexibility. As a business becomes more profitable, an S-corp election may provide potential tax advantages by allowing owners to split income between salary and distributions. However, the decision depends on many factors, including expected profitability, owner compensation, payroll requirements, state rules, and administrative costs.
The right structure should support where your business is today and where you plan to go tomorrow. We help business owners evaluate the options and choose an approach that fits their specific situation, not just what worked for someone else or what’s being fed to you on social media.
-
Of course! This is an industry in transition. It’s not uncommon to find yourself without a qualified CPA. We’re always here to help.
-
The answer depends on your income, business structure, deductions, and other sources of income. There is no universal percentage that works for everyone.
Many business owners start by setting aside a portion of their profits throughout the year, but the right amount depends on factors like profitability, state taxes, payroll, estimated payments, and prior-year tax obligations. Making accurate estimated payments can help avoid surprises, penalties, and unnecessary stress at tax time.
We work with clients to project their tax liability, understand what they may owe, and create a plan so taxes aren’t a last-minute scramble.
-
Our experience spans a wide range of industries and financial environments, including work with privately held and family-owned businesses, professional services and trades, real estate, manufacturing, and entrepreneurial ventures including the growing New England cannabis industry.
-
Yes, in certain situations. We work with individuals and business owners who have relatively straightforward cryptocurrency or digital asset activity and are looking to properly report and comply with current tax laws and reporting requirements. This may include things like buying and selling cryptocurrency, activity across major exchanges, or limited wallet transactions.
Our approach is focused on helping clients stay organized, understand the tax implications of their activity, and remain fully compliant as the regulatory environment continues to evolve.
-
We work with (and encourage our clients to work with) modern cloud-based accounting platforms and technology solutions that allow for more efficient collaboration, real-time financial visibility, and streamlined workflows. While many clients are on Quickbooks Online, we also help clients select, implement, and optimize systems that fit the way their business operates. We do tax and assurance work on industry leading practitioner software.
-
Yes: carefully, thoughtfully, and with client confidentiality as a top priority. We believe technology should make accounting and advisory services more efficient, organized, and accessible for our clients. We use modern cloud-based platforms and evolving technologies (including AI-assisted tools) in parts of our workflow to help streamline processes, improve efficiency, support research, and reduce administrative friction. However, we never share confidential client information or sensitive financial data with public AI models. Protecting client privacy, security, and trust remains central to how we operate.
We also recognize that AI is a tool, but not a substitute for professional judgment. While technology can help accelerate research and organization, all technical conclusions, tax positions, financial guidance, and client recommendations are reviewed, validated, and fact-checked by experienced professionals.
-
Yes, we can absolutely work with paper documents if that’s what you’re most comfortable with.
That said, we are a cloud-first firm, and our systems are designed around a secure client portal because it allows for faster processing, fewer errors, better organization, and more efficient collaboration. When documents are provided in paper form, we typically need to spend additional time scanning, organizing, and digitizing everything to integrate it into our workflow.
Because of that extra handling, engagements that rely heavily on paper documents may involve additional time and cost compared to using the portal directly.
-
Yes. We offer bookkeeping and accounting support ranging from foundational monthly services to more advanced controller and outsourced CFO-style support. Many clients start with bookkeeping and expand into advisory, tax planning, cash flow management, financial reporting, and operational support as their business grows.
-
As businesses grow, financial needs often become more complex than basic bookkeeping alone can support—but hiring a full internal accounting and finance team may not yet make practical or financial sense.
Our outsourced controller services focus on the accounting and reporting side of the business: maintaining accurate financials, improving processes, overseeing month-end close and reporting, managing cash flow visibility, strengthening internal controls, and helping create reliable financial information you can actually use to run the business.
Outsourced CFO support builds on that foundation by focusing more strategically on the future of the business: like budgeting/forecasting, growth planning, profitability analysis, financial decision-making, and helping owners better understand how operational decisions impact long-term business and personal financial goals.
The reality is that most growing businesses need elements of both. That’s why our approach is flexible and collaborative. We help clients build the right level of financial structure, oversight, and strategic support for where they are today while also preparing for where they want the business to go next.
-
Yes. We provide assurance and attestation services, including financial statement reviews and audits. Our background includes experience in complex accounting and reporting environments, allowing us to deliver high-quality assurance services while maintaining a practical and collaborative approach with clients.
-
Both audits and reviews provide credibility to your financial statements, but they involve different levels of assurance and procedures.
An audit is the highest level of assurance we provide. It involves obtaining evidence, testing transactions and balances, evaluating internal controls, and issuing an opinion on whether the financial statements are fairly presented.
A review provides limited assurance through analytical procedures and inquiries. It involves less testing than an audit but still provides lenders, investors, and other stakeholders with confidence that the financial statements have been reviewed by an independent CPA.
Many businesses don't need an audit, and many don't need more than a review. We help clients understand what level of service makes sense based on their goals, requirements, and budget.
-
We built our firm around relationships, accessibility, and proactive guidance. Many clients come to us after feeling like their previous accountant only appeared during tax season or communicated in overly technical ways without practical context. We focus on responsiveness, education, and helping clients understand the “why” behind financial decisions, not just delivering reports or tax returns.
-
Both. We use secure cloud-based systems and digital workflows that allow clients to work with us efficiently from anywhere, while still maintaining a personal and responsive relationship. Whether you prefer virtual collaboration via zoom, phone calls, or in-person meetings, we aim to make the process easy and comfortable.
-
Usually earlier than people think. Whether you are starting a business, growing quickly, making a large financial decision, dealing with a major life change, or simply feeling unsure about your current financial structure, having proactive guidance early can help prevent costly mistakes and create a clearer path forward.
-
Absolutely. We often work alongside internal teams, bookkeepers, and operational staff to provide higher-level oversight, tax strategy, reporting guidance, process improvement, or advisory support.
-
Protecting client information is one of our highest priorities. We use secure, cloud-based systems and workflows designed to help safeguard sensitive financial and personal data while still making collaboration convenient and efficient for our clients.
Documents and communications are shared through a secure client portal supported by a SOC 2-compliant platform, which is designed around industry standards for security, availability, and data protection. We also utilize secure access controls, encrypted systems, and modern technology practices intended to reduce risk and improve confidentiality.
Beyond technology, we believe security is also about process and judgment. We are thoughtful about how information is shared, stored, and accessed, and we continuously evaluate our systems and workflows as technology and cybersecurity risks evolve.
Our goal is to provide clients with the convenience of modern cloud accounting and digital collaboration without compromising the trust and confidentiality that are central to the accountant-client relationship.
-
Our goal is to make accounting feel less overwhelming and more collaborative. Clients can expect clear communication, practical guidance, responsive support, and a long-term relationship built on trust, not just transactional service.
